Freshman tenor trombonist Weston Olencki has advanced to the semi-finals of the Eastern Trombone Workshop's Division 1 National Solo Competition! Contestants submited a recorded audition of required repertoire at the beginning of December and were notified of their status as semi-finalists by mid-January. Semi-finalists will travel to the Workshop, held March 16-19 in Fort Myer, Virgina, to perform for a panel of judges. Judges select two finalists to advance from each division, who then perform for a public audience. Winners are chosen immediately following the concert. Many winners of the ETW Solo Competitions have gone on to spectacular musical careers and the awards carry a great deal of prestige. This year's repertoire selections are as follows:

TENOR TROMBONE

  • Division 1—Sonata No. 4 - Galliard, Johann Ernest
  • Division 2—Piece in Eb minor - Ropartz
  • Division 3—Arrows of Time - Peaslee, Richard

BASS TROMBONE

  • Division 1—Andante and Allegro Spiritoso - Senaille, Jean Baptiste
  • Division 2—Tetra Ergon - White, Donald
  • Division 3—New Orleans - Bozza, Eugen
Weston will be competing among some of the nation's most talented and promising musicians in March; congratulations and best of luck!
