This weekend, join us for a performance of the Albrechtsberger Concerto for Alto Trombone by Professor Michael Mulcahy and the Chicago Chamber Musicians. Performances will be held Sunday, November 11 at 7:30pm in the Music Institute of Chicago's Nichols Hall in Evanston and on Monday, November 12 at 7:30pm in Gottlieb Concert Hall at the Merit School of Music in Chicago. Class of '12 successes

Two graduating seniors will begin their careers next year with full time orchestra positions. Jeremy Morrow will make the move down to South Beach, Miami to play Bass Trombone in the New World Symphony. Jeremy won this audition after playing bass trombone for (a lucky) 13 months. And David Binder last week won the audition for Co-Principal Trombone in the Finnish National Opera, where he will be performing operas and ballets most nights of the week in Helsinki. Let's all wish them luck in their endeavors!

NU Faculty Quartet to Perform

The NU Faculty will present a quartet recital on Friday, April 6 in Regenstein Recital Hall. This marks the first time this quartet has concertized, and the debut is sure to be exciting. The program includes works by Scheidt, Schein, Gabrieli, Bach, Beethoven, Tomasi, Ross, and Shostakovich. For tickets and more information, visit the box office website.

This past week saw the Studio invade Fort Myer at the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop. On Thursday, senior David Binder won the Division II solo competition performing Darius Milaud's Concertino d'Hiver. The next day, Laboda Studio saw near full capacity for the Northwestern Trombone Choir concert. The concert featured both the entire studio performing en masse as well as smaller (between 8-12 players) pieces. Round off the weekend with trips into DC and Mediterranean food near the hotel (wow this place is great!), and ETW 2012 was a complete success!

Mulcahy Solo Recording

Professor Mulachy's first ever commercial solo recording is now available for purchase. "Full Circle" is a collaborative recording with fellow Australian trombonist Eric Klay.
From Klay's website: "Michael Mulcahy and Eric Klay first met at the Australian National Music Camp in 1975 in Adelaide. The following year they toured the United States with the Australian Youth Orchestra as part of Australia’s contribution to America’s Bicentennial celebrations. In 1977, both Michael and Eric joined the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra where a lifelong friendship developed. Thirty-five years later they have come "Full Circle" to record this CD.
The album features solo tenor and bass trombone, trombone trio and percussion, trombone and tape, and trombone quartet. For more information, please click here. Individual tracks can be downloaded here.

Doug Rosenthal Audition Success

Last week, Doug Rosenthal (BM '08) auditioned for and was offered a trail with the Utah Symphony on Second Trombone. Later in the week, Doug flew into Washington DC, where he won the Assistant Principal Trombone position with the Washington National Opera Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. Doug has been a member of the New World Symphony for the past three years, and prior to that was in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Doug graduated Northwestern in 2008, and has participated in the Music Academy of the West and Tanglewood summer festivals. Congratulations to Doug on all his hard work.
